Fee: Bags are available for purchase at: Township Office, Chassell General Store and DPW.
They come in 2 sizes:
33 gal with wave top-10 bags for $40 (Purple)
15 gal with drawstring-5 bags for $10 (Green)

Chassell Township Residents-NEW Garbage System!
Saturday, January 3rd, 2026 we will only be using the new Pay As You Throw (PAYT) bags. No cash will be accepted unless you purchase the new bags.
Why are we going to a PAYT system?
– Fairness – People who produce less trash, like seniors or those who compost and recycle well, will pay less.
– Encourages good habits – PAYT incentivizes recycling and composting, reducing the overall waste stream.
– Protects taxpayers – As tipping/disposal fees rise, PAYT helps the town control costs and avoid tax increases.

Recycling at Chassell
No Longer Accepting Glass (effective 2/10/25)
As of September 1, 2026 the township won’t be accepting any plastic or paper recycling due to Waste Management price increases. Metal and cardboard still accepted; see below for details.
Refund available for recycling cards purchased. Please see attendant. Sorry for any inconvenience.

Cardboard Recycling is Free! Please flatten all of your cardboard. Do not include any other materials in your cardboard. Thank you!
Reuse Shed
You don’t have to put it in the landfill! Items that are still usable, and in good shape for someone else can use can be put in the shed for others.
Bottle and can collection
The Chassell Fire Department accepts MI deposit cans and bottles for return. Please bring during normal garbage collection hours.
Yard Waste
Notice: Yard waste deposited in ditches or near waterways blocks the flow of rainwater during storms, increasing the potential for flooding.
Yard waste should be brought to the Old Dump site. Free disposal year-round.
Yard waste includes:
- Leaves
- Tree branches
- Grass clippings
- Brush
Yard waste disposal within Chassell Township is not permitted outside the Old Dump.
Composting is also available on-site.
To access the Old Dump site, request a key from the Chassell General Store or the Department of Public Works during open hours (see above).
